It is sung as a solo and typically has between four and five lines, but there are choupais which have up to 10 lines. A choupai is usually sung with a shabad, short lines of Tamil or Sanskrit. The term "choupai" is also used to describe the person who performs the whistling-match on the instrument. A typical choupai consists of four or five verses, each consisting of four lines. Each verse usually starts with one consonantal line followed by two or three words in Punjabi or Hindi. The last two lines of each verse are rhyming, and the swayabadi portion is an endless repetition of "ਸਭ ਚਾਖ ਅਬਿਗੁੰਤੀ" ("the whole world-sees"), i.e. the word "ਚਾਖ" ("sees") is repeated throughout. The verses are sung in either of the variations below: Tibetan Buddhists use a similar form of singing called the Avalokiteśvara-pratyutpanna chakra system. Bhagat Puran Singh has composed more than 80 such kirtans on Chaupai Sahib and they can be heard here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rz9l9CSgJ9w.
