The comic follows the life of an Italian truck driver who falls in love with his Romanian colleague during a delivery to Bucharest. Despite his initial reluctance, he falls in love with her and starts to consider changing his life for the better. Il camionista is inspired by the comic book's author's own experience as a long-haul truck driver. The comic book is also Mattotti's debut as a writer. The main character spends several days driving his truck from Genoa to Bucharest and falls in love with his female colleague. After the delivery, he decides to change his life and return to Italy. Beppe Giacobbe (alias Il Camionista) is an Italian truck driver who has spent all his life driving cargo across Europe. He lives alone in an abandoned building where he has all the utilities available, but does not pay for them, as nobody knows it exists or uses it anymore. During his travels, he meets a Romanian truck driver called Elena. At first they get on badly because of their national stereotypes, but soon become good friends and start to develop feelings for each other. Like the book itself, Il Camionista has been released in three different forms: Italian (as "Il camionista"), Romanian (as "Camelioțul") and English (as "The Truck Driver"). The two-volume Italian comic series was first published by ComiPress, with an English adaptation following in 2011. This version is currently available online in both free and paid-content formats from several sources. The original Italian version has also recently inspired the release of a mobile game by the same name, which is available for free on the iTunes Store. Although the series has not yet been licensed for an official English language release, an unofficial translation of both volumes is available online (see links below).
